Floral Sirocco Romper

Hello internet friends!

Today is part two of my Bali trip makes, ironically enough yet another jumpsuit (here’s the link to my Linen Zadie Jumpsuit!)! Well this is more of a romper technically but you get the idea! I wanted to make something that I could wear to and from my surf lessons as well as to pop on post pool sessions for meals.

I decided on the romper version for the Sirocco Jumpsuit by Deer and Doe after making a full length version over Christmas (yet another jumpsuit that I haven’t blogged about yet….I’m noticing a trend). Luckily for me I had recently done a complete fabric stash inventory, de-stash, and general tidy, while also making a digital catalogue of everything in Trello (more on that process in a follow up post). After a quick perusal through my online stash I re-found this lovely floral cotton jersey, a perfect pick for a tropical getaway.

This project came together really quickly as I sewed it mostly on my serger and utilized the walking foot on my regular sewing machine to make sure I didn’t get any wonky hems since the jersey was on the lighter weight side. In terms of amusements I shorted the bodice by about an inch and also altered the slope of the shoulders, reducing the slope by a good inch at the neckline on the back bodice piece and tapering to nothing at the sleeve. I made these alterations after experiencing some severe gaping at the V-neck as well as pooling at the lower back with my original Sirocco Jumpsuit which I had to go in an alter after the fact.

For the hems of this jumper I used a twin needled on my regular machine and tried altering the thread tension to try and reduce tunnelling of the fabric. Unfortunately I think the tension that I ultimately ended up using was too slack as the hem did start to come undone on one of the shorts hems which was made worse by someone trying to remove a spare thread for me by pulling on it and pretty much pulling the hem out :S I’ve been toying for awhile with the idea of investing in a coverstitch machine or at the very least an additional bobbin case that I can adjust the tension on specifically for twin hems so this may push me to try one of the two options.

I like how this romper turned out and as predicted it was perfect for wearing to and from my surf lessons and for snack time! I’m really glad that I’ll have it for the upcoming summer season in Vancouver :D Next up, my last Bali trip sewing posts, a new bikini I made in 24H pre trip!
